A 108-Year-Old Woman Shares Her Surprisingly Funny Secret To A Long Life

In 2015, Scotland’s oldest woman, Jessie Gallan, shared her surprising and funny secret to a long life. At 109-years-old, Jessie still “has her wits about her”, according to one of her caretakers at the senior care home where she lives. When interviewed, she chose to share some of that trademark wit. Her first bit of advice? Porridge. That’s right. Start every day with porridge. That certainly makes sense; a bit of fiber is good for you. Next, fill all of your days. Jessie lived quite an interesting life and was never idle. She grew up on a farm and left home at 13 to start making a living on her own milking cows. Later, she had a long career in the service sector. Clearly, hard work helped Jessie have a purpose and to feel fulfilled. That lends itself to her final piece of advice – never depend on anyone else. Specifically, never depend on a man. “They’re just more trouble than they’re worth,” Jessie shared with the Daily Mail. 108 and years of life and Jessie never married.

Confident and self-assured, Jessie spent her final days with as much vigor as she had her entire life. Always a social butterfly, she had plenty of friends at the senior center, including the staff. “She’s absolutely amazing,” boasted a caregiver.  She spent her days walking on her own around the care home, socializing with her many friends, and attending exercise classes and church. She obviously had a unique perspective on life, having witnessed an entire century of life and change. Jessie passed away in March of 2015, a few months after giving this inerview. But, she enjoyed a very long and very full life. If there’s one thing I took away from this amazing woman’s life, it’s that the most important thing is being your fearless self.
