Gardener Demonstrates How To Grow Blueberries At Home

I love blueberries! And I know that a lot of my friends and family members do too. There are endless ways you can use blueberries in your meals, and especially dessert! Everyone loves a blueberry cobbler, but my favorite has to be a soft blueberry muffin with my coffee.

Since they’ve become a common ingredient in a lot of desserts, I’m sure there are many of us out there who constantly need to stack up on blueberries. But why buy them every time you need them, when you can plant an endless amount of them right in your own garden?

Before watching the complete tutorial on how to grow and prune blueberries, here are some handy tips:

  1. Be picky: make sure to snag a bush that suits the climate that you live in. There actually are berries that do well in the warmer and humid weather and others that grow best in freezing temperatures!
  2. Check the soil: you need to ensure that you have the right amount of acidity in the soil before you can start planting (between 4 and 5). If you don’t, then we recommend planting your berries in a pot!
  3. Plant them correctly: if you’re going to do the job, do it right! Plant them where there is plenty of sunlight and at least 5 feet away from the next bush of berries. If you’re planting in a pot, 18-inch pot is best. And these plants require 1-2 inches of water each week.
  4. Keep the plants safe: HGTV suggest using bamboo stick or food-grade nets to protect your berries from animals and insects.
  5. Have them in abundance: A blueberry bush can produce fruit for up to 20 years. So best practice would be to prune the bushes every few years.
  6. Pick the best: If you plant them during the early spring season, they’ll be ready for picking by July. But wait a few days before picking the ripe, blue ones.
