Little Pig Comforts A Neglected Sickly Calf

When you’re feeling ill, it helps to have a close friend or family member by your side to comfort you. Just the presence of someone is enough to help you feel a little better, even if the only improvement is mental and emotional. Animal friends can also help sick people. There’s even scientific evidence that having an animal companion helps people live longer, healthier lives, and heal faster when sick.

It’s difficult to say whether or not the same is true for animals since they can’t speak to tell us if they are helped by the presence of another animal. But, just by observation, we can tell that a caring and compassionate presence of another animal can soothe one that is sick. Sometimes, when things look positively dire, a friend can help give an ailing animal just enough hope to keep fighting. Bunny, a little calf, was rescued from slaughter. The kind woman who saved him, along with three little piglets, could not care for the animals herself, but brought them to Sugarshine Farm Sanctuary for help.

Kelly Nedler picked up Bunny when his original rescuer wasn’t able to care for him.

He was incredibly thin, weak, and sick.

Too weak to live outside, Bunny slept inside the house on a mattress. One of the little piglets, Baby, came to investigate.

Nedler made Baby leave, but the piglet insisted on coming back in and staying with Bunny.

Even as Bunny’s condition worsened, Baby stayed right by his side, snuggling and comforting.

Bunny came down with pneumonia and Nedler took him to the vet, but things did not look good.

Because of pain and seizures, Nedler thought she would have to euthanize Bunny. But, Baby never left his friend. And then, Bunny started to feel better…

His health gradually improved and he was even able to go outside… with his best friend.

Bunny continues to improve, though he is still weak and requires medication. Thanks to Nedler and his little piggy friend, Bunny has a second chance at life.
