I love food. Humans love food. Animals love food! Every living, breathing, moving organism loves and needs food! Dogs are no exception. You don’t even have to own a dog to know that dogs love food too. It may not even matter if it’s a food that they like, they’ll still beg for it.
This has led many to ask the question “would a dog stop eating if they were given an unlimited amount of food?” In other words, does a dog know when it’s time to stop? The answer, perhaps not too surprisingly, it depends on the dog!
Not unlike myself when I’m offered “endless shrimp” from a certain seafood restaurant, some dogs just can’t help themselves and will eat until they get sick. But fortunately, most dogs will stop once they’ve had enough. It does make me wonder though, what kind of weird human food will dogs eat a surplus amount of? Ice cream? Hot dogs? (This should go without saying but please don’t go testing this with your dog – this is just “food for thought!”).
Before we get too off point, let’s bring it back to the video. When one man came upon a stray dog that was begging for food, he assumed this dog was really hungry. He had some freshly grilled chicken so he gave her a piece, and the dog graciously accepted. Here’s where it gets interesting. Instead of chowing down on the delicious meal (like anyone would assume she’d do), she ran off with the food intact. She didn’t whimper, whine or just take a little nibble. In fact, she ran off with it, delicately hanging in her mouth, careful to not drop it or lose it. Eventually, the dog returned and begged for more. The man gave her another piece of grilled chicken and watched as the dog ran off yet again with the food intact. So this time he followed her to see what she was doing. When she finally got to her destination, the man realized what she was doing: feeding her puppies!
This thoughtful mom wanted to make sure that her babies were provided for and to the best of her ability. We don’t know their story or how they got to where they are. One thing is for sure though. She’s doing what mothers do best and that’s looking out for their pups.
