As a child, when I visited an animal park or zoo, one of my favorite animals to see was the dolphins. Their unique shape, long noses, and sleek bodies moving through the water are fascinating to watch. But, it was their intelligent often comical personalities that drew me in the most.
The dolphin show always featured the adorable animals performing feats and funny acts. They jumped through hoops and sprayed water on their trainers. They flew by the audience at high speed and splashed us with their tails, to everyone’s absolute delight. I’m the furthest person from a dolphin expert, but it appeared as if they were having fun.
Dolphins are widely recognized as being extremely intelligent, and new research only supports the fact. Dolphins World shares some fun interesting facts about dolphin intelligence:
“– Their forms of communication are complex, evolving and diverse.
– They are creative and playful animals. Their behavior is not mechanical or rigid; they seem to enjoy playing and look for the companionship of other individuals.
– Their empathy suggests that they experience emotions such as sadness or joy.”
And…
“– The members of a pod collaborate with each other and sometimes with other species of animals.”
While this final tidbit means that they work together and with other animals in the wild, it may explain why the five young dolphins in this video are so enamored with nearby squirrels. The group of dolphins in a nursery in Sea World are mesmerized by the little creatures outside of their tank. As a group, they gather around, moving when the squirrels do, and even mimicking the body language of the tiny squirrels.
It’s amazing to watch, and an excellent reminder of just how intelligent, sensitive, and inquisitive these animals are, and that they are deserving of humans’ respect and kindness.
