7 Hacks To Keep Flowers Fresh

I love buying flowers. In my mind, they’re one of the most beautiful additions to any room and can make the atmosphere feeling really fresh. I have 3 vases of flowers sitting in my room right now, and I have been working really hard to ensure that they don’t dry up and wither away any time soon. And I’m sure flower lovers can relate when I say, THAT is a hard task.

I understand that flowers will eventually dry up and it’ll be time to get rid of them, but it’s disheartening to see some of them only last up to a week or so before the beautiful pedals start to brown on the outside. So how can we prolong their existence in and around the home? Continue reading these 7 ways you can make sure that your flowers don’t die too quick!

1. Keep them cold

I’ve always wondered why my local flower shop has a huge fridge filled with flowers, well now I know why. If you put your flowers in the fridge overnight the cool air will keep them from going back quicker, and you can simply pull them out the next morning and put them back on display.

2. Hairspray

Spraying your flowers with a little bit of hairspray will make them last longer and also help the petals stay in place.

3. Cut the stems correctly

Not many people know that stems are supposed to be cut at a 45 degree angle, and about an inch from the bottom of the stem. This technique ensures that the flowers can properly suck in the water and stay hydrated.

4. Open closed buds

Put your flowers in warm water for a minute and then switch them to a vase full of cold water; leave them in the cold water for 2o minutes. This process will help open their buds.

5. Make a vinegar mix

Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the water before putting your flowers into the vase. This will ensure that they stay fresh longer. But don’t forget to change the water every couple of days!

6. Add vodka to the mix

Similar to the vinegar mix, add a teaspoon of white sugar and a few drops of vodka to the water before putting the flowers into the vase. The vodka actually prevents flowers from drooping/withering.

7. Throw a penny into the water

Copper works wonders to help increase the shelf life of flowers. It acts as a acidifier and helps prevent bacteria and fungus from quickly growing/spreading.
