Over the years I have attended several sporting events. As much as I like to watch games and events on television, in the comfort of my own home, complete with my comfy sofa, homemade snacks, and clean, private bathroom, it’s hard to replace the feeling of a large, public sports arena. Despite the noise, crowds, uncomfortable seats, and over-priced food and drinks, it’s an irreplaceable experience.
Watching an event live is exciting and memorable, but what I enjoy most is the electric feeling of excitement in the air. Whether it’s a sporting event or something else, there’s something incredibly special about having hundreds or even thousands of people come together to watch the same thing as a group.
The experience can be loud and overwhelming, but there’s a point at the beginning of every event where the crowd goes silent. There are few things that can make thousands of people collectively silence themselves with very little prompting.
But, when an announcer proclaims that the National Anthem will be played in a few moments, each person stands quietly and faces the flag and for a few moments, everyone is part of a much larger whole. Whatever the flag or the Anthem means to you, we can all agree that it deserves our respect and admiration.
We’ve all heard The National Anthem of The United States, or “The Star Spangled Banner”, played and performed hundreds of times. Some performances are better than others and some are truly moving. It’s a great honor to be asked to perform it.
When five little girls in pigtails from Texas, called The Cactus Cuties, took the stage to perform, everyone probably thought they would be adorable. However, few would have predicted that they would give such a gorgeous and professional performance.
