When Grandma Wants To Move Closer To The Family, Dad Has A Genius Solution

Grandmas love to spend time with their grandkids, and after Martin Brown and his wife had their son, Martin’s mother-in-law wanted to live closer to the family. Having Grandma live nearby has lots of benefits. Not only is it nice to be able to spend time with family, but grandmas make pretty good built-in babysitters.

The tiny house movement has been in full-swing for a while now. I absolutely love the concept (inexpensive, tiny footprint, the movement towards more sustainable living, etc.) and I always watch those tiny house shows and I’m extremely impressed by the gorgeous reveals. But, it just never seems like it could actually work in real life. Especially, if the tiny home has to fit more than one person, let alone a family. The ceilings are low, the toilets are in the shower, and there’s no room for anything in the kitchen. I dislike clutter as much as anyone, but some of these tiny homes don’t have room for anything.

Martin Brown of Seattle seems to have the right idea in designing this particular tiny home, however. First and foremost, it’s designed with a single person in mind. Cleverly outfitted, the 140 square foot converted garage actually manages to provide enough living space. Since it’s next to the main house and is meant to be a cozy, private space for Grandma, we can also assume that she has access to the main house. The kitchen is adorable, and even uses pieces from the original, antique garage. The clever use of dish draining and storage saves time, effort, and space. The upstairs has a large, comfy bed and space for books. The overall feel of the cottage is warm, cozy, and surprisingly spacious. Clever comfort and privacy are the primary features. Take a look and see what you think of this charming home!
