My dad always says, “Old is gold.” I know he’s referring to his growing age with this saying, especially when we call him old with each passing birthday (lol!), but this phrase is accurate for more than just age and humans. There is so much more that is marveled as it grows old with time, and music is no different.
There are classic tunes, songs, and melodies that we have grown up with. We all love the original versions of let’s say, “Sound of Silence,” or “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” but as these songs get older and older, people are always reinventing them with their unique renditions; and often, it’s more than just singing the song. By this I mean that there are some who will add their own spin to the song; others will recreate the magic of the song through a dance routine; and then, there are those who take things to a whole new level.
In the video shared below, you’ll see Jamie Dupuis paying a beautiful tribute to the Righteous Brothers by playing their famous song, “Unchained Melody,” on the harp guitar. Although the harp guitar isn’t that well-known to people around the world, this isn’t the first time it has made rounds on the internet. The unique instrument exudes some of the melodious tunes you’ll ever hear coming from a stringed instrument, and this performance is proof of it. It’s literally music to your ears as you see the young man go through the entire song on the different-looking instrument.
Many performers don’t play the music of the song and merely sing to a background score. Although there is nothing wrong with this, and some of the renditions are amazing, it’s a fresh treat to see musicians resort to different instruments to recreate the magic of classics such as “Unchained Melody.” It comes as a good change to the renditions we see on talent shows and on TV. I think this instrument is also a great way of adding a unique touch to the song to make it your own.
