Dominic Gant is a high school junior that just wanted to have some lunch. But while he was trying to get a meal at the school cafeteria, the lunch lady grabbed the tray from out of his hands and threw it away in front of everyone. “It was really embarrassing,” Dominic explained to CNN. “Right in front of the whole lunch room, they took my plate away and said I didn’t have enough to eat today.” Dominic apparently owed the school less than $5 for previously unpaid lunches.
Unpaid lunches at schools have been an ongoing problem in America. Many school districts have reported their school nutrition program had unpaid student-meal debt at the end of the years. Some of these debts were very substantial. But schools have been scrutinized for the insensitive and sometimes cruel ways they have been dealing with the many children who simply can’t afford to pay for meals because they live in poverty.
So when Dominic’s mother, Amanda Kown, learned how her son was shamed over a few dollars, she was furious. She simply couldn’t believe that the school would refuse her son a simple meal in such a spiteful way, even throwing his perfectly good meal into the trash. “I was appalled that he was denied lunch and his lunch was taken out of his hands over $5,” Amanda said.
So what did Mom do? She marched on over to the school and not only does she pay off her son’s debt, she pays off the entire past due balance of the entire school! “I don’t want another kid to going through what my son went through.” What a wonderful and amazing gesture!
