Street Monkey’s Motherly Instincts Kick In When She Sees Stray Dog In Need Of Protection

In many animals, especially mammals, the “mother” instinct is powerful. Mothers are known to do practically anything to protect their babies. They will put themselves in harm’s way, as long as their baby is safe.

A mother animal may spend the day searching for food and eat very little themselves. They will fight larger animals and even use themselves as bait to draw predators away from vulnerable young. Going near an animal that is protecting their babies can be dangerous, even for humans.

In Rode, India it is not uncommon to see both monkeys and stray dogs roaming the streets. Naturally, the two species have occasional run-ins when there is a dispute over food or something else, but they usually keep to themselves. But, one rhesus macaque is drawing attention for her choice in company.

The monkey has adopted a tiny, stray puppy. Without the “mother” monkey, this little puppy may not have survived on its own. The monkey carries her adopted baby everywhere she goes. She’s a fierce protector, guarding the little one against other threatening stray dogs.

People who have observed the pair have begun leaving food out for them and surprisingly when there is food available, the monkey always makes sure that the puppy eats first.

“People who have seen them spoke of their strong mutual affection and described their bond as the most caring thing in the world — to take care of a puppy in danger and protect him like a parent. Their undying affection gives us a valuable lesson about relationships.”

This monkey is a clear example of the strength of a mother’s love. A mother can love and care for anyone vulnerable, even if it’s not the same species.
