According To Science, ‘Nagging Moms’ Raise Successful Daughters

Growing up isn’t easy—whether you’re a boy or a girl. We’re given hardly any independence, we have to got to school five times a week, get permission to go out, go to bed at a certain time and basically have very little say in the things that we do or want to do.

On top of that, we usually have our parents scolding us day in and day out. “Pick up your dirty clothes! Feed the dog! Do the dishes! Have you finished your homework? No, you may not go to that party! What music are you listening to? It’s not appropriate for someone your age!” It’s all completely frustrating and anger-some. In the grander scheme of things however, these little things that our parents do for us are their way of showing us love and respect while hoping we turn out to be semi-decent adults in the near future.

Having said that, science has actually concluded that girls whose mothers nag them during childhood actually end up being more successful in life. Researcher Erika Rascon-Ramirez from the University of Essex conducted a study that ultimately proved, “Behind every successful woman, is a nagging mom”. She did a study on 15,000 school girls aged 13-14 from 2004 to 2010 and what she found was astonishing.

“The measure of expectations in this study reflects a combination of aspirations and beliefs about the likelihood of attending higher education reported by the main parent, who, in the majority of cases is the mother,” she said. In this way, she found that girls whose mothers pushed and encouraged them to do more, ended up making better life decisions. It was also proved that nagging mothers decreased the likelihood of teenage pregnancy by up to 4%, raised daughters that were more prone to earn better salaries, build a successful career and attending university.

“In many cases we succeeded in doing what we believed was more convenient for us, even when this was against our parents’ will. But no matter how hard we tried to avoid our parents’ recommendations, it is likely that they ended up influencing, in a more subtle manner, choices that we had considered extremely personal,” explained researcher Rascon-Ramirez.
