A 4-Year-Old Calls A Lonely Widower ‘Old’, But His Response Surprised Everyone

Tara Wood has raised a very special little girl. Four-year-old Norah loves older people and she explained that unique affinity to her mother. Quite wise beyond her very young years, Norah appreciates what older people have to offer and enjoys their presence. While some youngsters may be uncomfortable around older folks, Norah is the exact opposite.

The day before Norah turned four, her mother took her to the grocery store to buy cupcakes for her celebration. After picking out the birthday cupcakes, Tara stopped to browse in the clearance section and found herself alongside an older gentleman. And as children do, gregarious little Norah spoke directly to him. “Hi old person! It’s my birfday today!”, she said excitedly.

Tara was understandably embarrassed because she had used the words ‘old person’ and started to apologize. However, the older gentleman had a very surprising response for the little girl and her mother.

Tara Wood is a stay-at-home mom and writer. Norah is just one of her and her husband’s seven children.

When Norah wanted cupcakes to share with her siblings for her birthday, her mother obliged.

When Norah called another patron in the store ‘old’, Tara was immediately mortified. But the gentleman wasn’t bothered at all.

This is what he had to say: “Well, hello little lady! And how old are you today?” After a brief conversation, they went their separate ways. But, Norah wanted a birthday photo with her new friend, so they tracked him down in the store.

Norah and the older man, Mr. Dan, shared a few minutes chatting and taking photos. Even Tara had a photo with their new pal. When it was time to go, they thanked him and he said,”No, thank YOU. This has been the best day I’ve had in a long time. You’ve made me so happy, Miss Norah.”

Later, Tara shared the wonderful encounter on her Facebook page, and a reader recognized Mr. Dan. She told Tara that his wife had recently passed and he had been quite lonely. Tara asked for his number and made a call.

Mr. Dan invited little Norah and her mom to his home, and they shared several wonderful hours together.

Norah asks about her new friend often. She worries about him, but Mr. Dan assures Tara that he is doing much better now. “Mr. Dan thinks about Norah, too. After another recent visit, he relayed that he hadn’t had an uninterrupted night’s sleep since his wife died. He told me that he has slept soundly every night since meeting my girl,” says Tara.

Norah and Tara make an effort to visit Mr. Dan every week.
