Pentatonix Puts A Capella Spin On Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”

What is your favorite form of music? Rap? Jazz? Opera? Whatever you like to listen to, you understand that your most-loved type of music is what brings you joy when things are rough, or if you’re just having a bad day. Right? I know I can turn to music for some solace, it always makes me feel better.

Believe it or not, but I still like to listen to some acapella when I’m in bad mood. There’s something about it that brightens the day for me, and I love to listen to the difference acapella makes to a classic song.

If you stopped following acapella music and groups when the television show “Glee” ended, you’re definitely missing out. Since the show started, and even before, acapella was seeing a surge in popularity. School glee clubs and “show choirs” were starting to showcase less traditional and more modern styles of music, dance, costumes, and performances.

The stuffy bowties and glittery vests worn by stiff performers singing the same old songs were and are continually being replaced by revolutionary style, flair, and musical talent. People are taking notice and the modern acapella style, even outside the competitive arena, appears to be here to stay. And I couldn’t be happier.

One stand out in the new world of acapella is a group called Pentatonix. If you haven’t heard of them yet, now’s the time to familiarize yourself. They are taking the music and internet world by storm with their covers of classics like Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and a mesmerizing performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.

When I first watched the video of “Hallelujah”, with its haunting and simple style, I was sure that they had hit their peak. There was no way the supergroup could put together something else that gave me the chills and brought so many emotions to the surface, but in this instance, I was quite wrong indeed.

Few people or groups have taken on Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and do it justice. Freddy Mercury was and continues to be an irreplaceable icon and the sounds of his version are imprinted on my soul. But, Pentatonix added its own unique vibe while staying true to the iconic piece of music. In only the first moments, chills ran down my spine and I was delighted throughout. It’s a truly outstanding performance in Pentatonix’s signature style.
