11 Camera Hacks To Take Photos Like The Pros

Do you consider yourself a fan of the arts? Do you love the written word, using a paintbrush, creating exciting stories and/or taking photographs? It goes without saying that technology has advanced so much in the last decade that taking photos is almost an integral part of our lives today. With Instagram, Facebook and even Twitter, we’re encouraged to take a snapshot of the things we’re doing, the people we’re seeing and the (happy) life that we’re living.

And while all of this is possible using a smartphone, aspiring photographers know that owning a professional camera is an absolute treat. They also know that the gear associated with photography is sometimes pretty darn expensive—which is entirely unnecessary with these awesome DIY photography hacks. Now, anyone can change their somewhat-amateur photographer status to that of a pro with the use of simple things you can find around the house.

1. Diffuse light using an empty milk carton

Sometimes, the harsh light that flashes during a photo shoot creates an image that is less than desirable. But if you take the handle of an empty milk carton, cut a slit down the whole length (splitting it in half), you can slide it over your flash, negating the effects of harsh light.

2. Create a macro-lens using a toilet roll

Take a toilet roll tube and cut it to around 100mm. Use a piece of neoprene or black paper on the inside to get rid of light reflections. Get a body cap and cut a hole in the front. After this, tape the toilet roll tube to the body cap. Once complete, attach the lens in a reversed fashion so that the front element goes into the tube. Then, tape into place.

3. Create your own light box

Tape a piece of grease-proof paper to a clean window, set your camera to aperture priority, set the aperture to f/8 and set the ISO to 100. Then, brighten your exposure by going to the exposure compensation setting and choose +1. When taking your photo, make sure to focus on the biggest image in the shot.
