Quirky Emu Sees Fun-Looking Toy On Lawn. Seconds Later, She’s Frolicking Like Never Before

As if emus weren’t lovely and unusual, to begin with! As an Australian native, most of the world wasn’t familiar with them until Europeans discovered emus in 1696. The emu is the second-largest living bird by height, outweighed by its native relative the cassowary. It’s got a soft feathered body with long legs and a long neck. They are flightless animals and are a proud cultural symbol of Australia.

While they aren’t the most quick-witted of the animal kingdom, they are hilarious to watch and have big personalities.

This is Blacky the pet emu. At first, Blacky is standing very close to the sprinkler – almost on top of it! She’s unafraid of the spraying water and obviously likes to stand close by. She wiggles her head in closer before plopping down on her legs, glancing at the sprinkler, then putting her full body weight on the actual head of the sprinkler, effectively “turning it off.”

Blacky pauses for a moment, wondering what happened to her fun toy, before literally falling over – making another cute plopping sound – and rolling over like a frolicking dog. She loves the water! And rightly so on a hot day in Australia.

She pulls quite the rollover stunt. It’s awkward and funny and looks like it was a haphazard way of getting up over her “shoulder” if she had one. She’s like a bouncy, small child getting all up in there for her first time! Her owner says, “She is three years old and pretty nasty and crazy, but at the end of the day, she is an emu and just loves water! They are quite unbalanced creatures as you can see.” And you can see that since Blacky’s stability is wobbly. She folds over and sort of rolls around on the ground. I think I watched this at least three times.
