Scarves Tied Around The City During The Holidays Means 1 Thing

If you are looking forward to spending the holiday season in your warm, comfortable home, with presents under the tree and a delicious dinner on the table, take a moment to be thankful for everything that you have. Not everyone is as lucky.

My family doesn’t make a big deal out of Christmas. We exchange a few gifts and sit down for a meal. We talk about past holidays and what they mean to us. We don’t have a ton of decorations or stacks of presents, but that doesn’t mean that we aren’t incredibly fortunate. We have the time away from work to spend with family, we have enough extra funds to purchase gifts for one another, and we prepare a special meal just for the day. We all go home to warm, comfortable houses with full stomachs and a few meaningful gifts to use and admire.

Though it’s important to remember the less fortunate every day, the holidays can be particularly difficult for those who are struggling financially, experiencing food insecurity, are spending the holidays alone, or don’t have a home at all in which they can celebrate. While we enjoy gifts, food, and family, there are those who are struggling to stay warm and find something to eat.

While you may not know how you can help, even the smallest gestures can make a difference. In a movement that started in Indiana, people are tying scarves, sometimes used, but often new or handmade, around trees, light poles, and signposts. Many have a message attached, like this: “I’m not lost! Please take me with you if you are cold. Stay warm. God bless!”

These scarves are available for anyone who may need it, especially those who are less fortunate.
