Instead Of Chasing Them Out, This Coffee Shop Opens Its Doors To Stray Dogs Every Night

I live in a city where stray dogs are not a common sight. Consequently, if I see a dog roaming the streets, I would assume the poor pup is lost and in need of immediate help. So when I travel to places with a lot of stray dogs (and other animals), I’m in for a bit of a shock and it takes some time for me to wrap my head around what’s going on. But something I’ve learned is that while there are certainly places where a stray dog is truly in danger, there are also places where these strays are considered “community dogs.” These dogs are taken care of by the people of the community, who feed them and play with them whenever they come around. While it would be ideal if these dogs had a real home, this is far better than places who simply euthanize any stray dogs that they find.

A photo from a cafe called Hott Spott on the Greek island of Lesbos has been making the rounds on the internet because it provides a beautiful example of love and compassion for our four-legged friends. The photo shows several stray dogs sleeping on the cafe’s benches at night during closed hours. Several months ago, the cafe shop had made the decision to give stray dogs a place to sleep, keeping them out of the cold. A server at the cafe explained, “In the city, there are many dogs. When the bar closes each night, the dogs come and sleep here. We don’t have a problem. From July, every night there is a dog on the couch.”

“Our law is about rehabilitating the dogs” explained the head of Athens’ Stray Animal Service. “People here take care of them and love them. They are like everyone’s dog.” In Greece, the culture is very loving towards dogs. Stray dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered, and collared. Amazing!

Take note, folks… our world needs more love like this and a reminder that all life is precious. Please share this wonderful story your family and friends.
