I have to admit that when it comes to plants I’m actually really quite selfish. You see, if I’m going to spend all this time painstakingly taking care of them, I’m naturally going to ask “what’s in it for me?” Okay, getting rid of nasty carbon dioxide and producing clean oxygen is a good start but… got anything to eat? Yep, I’m all about plants that grow delicious food. Apples, mangoes, peaches, pears, cherries… the list goes on and on. But like most people, I have limited resources. I don’t have a whole lot of time for gardening nor do I have much available gardening space.
So what to do? If only there was some kind of magical tree that could grow all kinds of fruits… wait, what!? Such a tree actually exists? How can this be possible and why have I never heard of it!?
Meet the Sam Van Aken, the man behind this glorious plant that produces not one, but 40 different fruits from a single tree. It started out as a wild idea but after conducting some research, Sam realized that he could actually engineer the tree that is now known as The Tree of 40 Fruits. The tree focuses heavily on stone fruits, also known as drupes, which are fruits that have a large “stone” inside. Stone fruits include peaches, nectarines, plums, mangoes, cherries, and much more.
The whole thing sounds like something out of a fairytale but it’s real and the results are quite stunning. Not only is the tree itself absolutely gorgeous, it also provides a very bountiful and diverse harvest.
