I’m extremely lucky to have had a wonderful best friend for the majority of my life. I can’t even remember when we met, but we must have been around 10 or 11 years old at the time. At that age, making friends seems so simple — you meet, share a funny joke or start talking to one another and before you know it you’re inseparable.
Though we didn’t even go to the same school or even live that close, we were fortunate enough to have parents who made sure that we could see each other whenever we had the chance. Summer was the best when we were able to spend all of our time together, switching from one home to the other. When school started, we would have to separate again but our friendship is so strong that I never once questioned that my best friend would always be there when I needed her.
Fast forward many years and we’re as close as ever, even though we now live several states apart. We have careers, families, and a million responsibilities but we keep in touch regularly and visit as much as we can. Sometimes, life gets busy and we don’t talk for a while, but when we do it’s like no time has even passed.
The interesting thing is that even though we’re the best of friends, we’re actually very different people. But, sometimes it’s those differences that foster the best friendships.
Ben is a water-loving dog in Ireland and he has a very unique best friend. Each day, he rushes to the sea and swims out farther than you might think he should. There, he meets his best friend Duggie, who happens to be a dolphin!
When Ben shows up, Duggie pops out of the water. Ben’s owner, Pat Doohan, explains how they play:
“Then she’ll pop up on the other side. It is just wonderful to watch. They seem to be having great sport…Occasionally a school of dolphins will go by and she will join them. When I see them I think she will forget the island and go back to her wild ways but she never does.”
I have to admit that watching and reading about Ben and Duggie brought tears to my eyes. These amazing creatures are a great reminder that friendship can overcome nearly anything and that we should never let our differences or distance keep us apart.
