Man Rubs Raw Tomato Against A Cheese Grater To Make A Classic Sauce

I don’t know a single person that doesn’t enjoy pasta. I mean, how can anybody not love a warm bowl of al dente pasta with a fragrant, herby tomato sauce? Just thinking about a rich bolognese sauce or a slow braised short rib ragu is enough to make my mouth water.

But as much as I enjoy picking out my own fresh ingredients and making my meals from scratch when it comes to tomato sauce, I tend to reach for the canned or jarred variety. And let’s be honest, this is the case for the vast majority of people. Why? Because it’s super convenient and most people think that making a fresh homemade tomato sauce is just way too complicated. However, as it turns out, it’s a lot simpler than all of us think.

Thanks to Food & Wine’s Justin Chapple, we now know the amazing trick to easily making your own fresh tomato sauce made from simple, pure ingredients. The secret weapon? A cheese grater! No need for peeling, slicing, and dicing.

Just place the grater in a large bowl, cut your ripe tomatoes in half and grate it along the cut-side. You’ll find that the grater will naturally peel the tomatoes. Once that’s done, Justin adds some olive oil, salt, and pepper. Of course, feel free to add some other ingredients to make it your own. Personally, I like to add roasted garlic, some oregano and a lot of fresh basil! You can eat this sauce as-is or use it as a base for other delicious sauces.
