21 Costume Mistakes In Film History

Ever watched a TV show or movie and mid-way thought to yourself, “Wow, it can’t get better than this!” – me neither! I have yet to watch a movie that I think is perfect. Sometimes the film lacks a good cast, other times it’s the storyline that just doesn’t cut it for me, and then there are those movies that just don’t make sense in some of the things that they portray. Costumes are one of these elements.

I love to watch period films, those that are depicted in ancient times and have a history-related plot to follow. But, it’s needless to say that a lot of time and research needs to go into a movie like this, so the audience feels that it is authentic. The reason I say this is because there are so many incidents in which a lot of the costumes that the characters wear don’t represent the era that the film is supposed to be shot in – there’s lack of research, and therefore a lack of authenticity.

Have you ever felt the same when watching movies? Do you have a list of the worst costume fails in the history of film jotted in your head? If so, then check out the one we’ve compiled below to see which ones made your list, and which ones you should add!

1. “Django Unchained”

For anyone who isn’t familiar with the fashion trend of a fresh pair of sunnies, let me tell you that Americans didn’t start wearing them until 1929. For some unexplained reason, Jamie Foxx is way ahead of the game as he rocks a pair of crisp sunglasses throughout this Tarantino classic, which was set about 70 years before 1929. Fashion foreshadowing?

2. “Braveheart”

Ok, so everyone knows that this movie takes place in the 1300s, right? So, why is Mel Gibson’s character sporting a kilt throughout the film when Scottish people didn’t introduce this piece into their wardrobe until the 16th century? Interesting.

3. “My Girl”

So, Vada had a mood ring in this film – a different story that mood rings didn’t come into the market until three years after this movie was released.

4. “Pirates of the Carribean”

It may be a bit easy to miss, so we’ll point this one out for you. There’s a random cowboy in the background of this scene – I guess the pirate look wasn’t really his thing.

Sometimes you miss it, but you can’t always dodge a costume fail. And, when you notice one in your favorite movie, then it’s bound to bug you until it’s over and then some more. I guess fails are a part of life and we just have to accept them and move on. But, costume fails in movies make you wonder who wasn’t doing their job right. Right?

5. “Schindler’s List”

Every woman in this movie has her arms and armpits shaved. It’s interesting to think that concentration camps possibly provided a facility for women to indulge in self-grooming, it’s even more interesting to know that shaving didn’t become a common practice for European women until the 1940s.

6. “Indian Jones and the Last Crusade”

Each of the N***s that Harrison Ford beats in this scene are wearing war medals that were particular to WWII. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t this movie take place before the war happened?

7. “Seabiscuit”

It only makes sense that all the jockeys in “Seabiscuit” are wearing chinstraps – safety first! But, chinstraps weren’t introduced to horseracing until 1956, and this movie takes places in the 1930s.

8. “The Aviator”

Simply put, these glasses look way too modern for Robert Gross to be wearing in a movie that’s from the 1920s. Just saying.

Believe it or not, there’s more to this list than the eight costume fails that we’ve already shared. Click on the next page to keep reading!

Just when you thought that this list couldn’t get any better, let me tell you that it just did! Since fancy glasses in the ’20s and trendy mood rings just weren’t enough, the list continues below – we’re sure you’ll wanna check it out for yourself!

Here are four more wardrobe fails that movie-makers didn’t catch, but we definitely did!

9. “Singin’ in the Rain”

This film takes place in the 1920s. The beautiful gown that Cathy is wearing in this scene was a popular trend in the 1950s. Way to be authentic, people.

10. “The Ten Commandments”

I think “The Ten Commandments” reigns supreme in portraying historical inaccuracies, but the one that sticks out like a sore thumb is this one. Nefertiti’s dress just couldn’t be of that color because there was no natural dye of that hue to turn clothing into that shade of blue.

11. “Pearl Harbour”

These women are missing something from their look – nylon stockings. Nylons were a key part of a female’s getup before WWII.

12. “Amadeus”

Every costume in this film has a zipper. It’s a different story that zippers were invented 120 years after Mozart died.

And, we’re still not done! Click on the next page to read about some of the most epic costumes fails, in film history!

I know a fashion faux-pas when I see one. I like to consider myself the fashion police at times because I have no qualms in telling someone how they should’ve worn their leather moto jacket with a pair of skinny jeans as opposed to joggers – this attitude is all in good reason.

I also have no qualms about sharing the images below which show horrible wardrobe fails committed at the hands of famous movie stars, in big-budget films!

13. “Dirty Dancing”

This film took place in the 1960s. Baby is heavily foreshadowing a popular trend with those denim shorts – they didn’t make it into the market until the 1980s.

14. “Alien”

Alien removes helmet = Kane’s hood magically disappearing

15. “American Hustle”

That Rolex he’s wearing wasn’t made until 2010. “American Hustle” takes place in the 1970s. Odd.

16. “The Wizard of Oz”

What happened to her ruby red slippers in this scene?!

There’s more where these came from, so tune into the next page and keep reading! We’ve saved the best for last!

Movies are supposed to a mindless form of entertainment. You just follow along with the storyline and watch your favorite stars look exceptionally well on screen. But, there’s a problem when these movies require you to put some thought into what just happened in a scene. That’s when you know the movie failed you. And so did these outfit choices below.

17. “The Empire Strikes Back”

Was that jacket there the whole time? I don’t think so.

18. “The Avengers”

Even their clothes have superpowers? Is that a self-fixing suit? Hmm…

19. “The Informant”

The characters in this movie are wearing some snazzy Nike golf shoes. Nike didn’t sell golf shoes until 1996. This movie was made in 1990. Uh oh.

20. “The Wedding Singer”

Drew Barrymore should have used that hairstyle for a film in the 1990s…I swear there was something more fitting for the ’80s.

21. “Gladiator”

Ancient Romans had bike shorts? I wouldn’t have known that without seeing them underneath Russel Crowe’s tunic in this scene. The Ancient Romans were quite trendy, huh?
