Who doesn’t like enjoying a nice day at the beach? A day to soak up the sun, work on your tan, build sand castles, splash around in the water, and just relax and unwind. But being the paranoid person that I am, something that has always bothered me was the idea of leaving all of my beach gear unattended whenever everyone wants to go into the water. I know, I know… if you look out into a beach, you’ll more than likely see plenty of blankets, chairs, umbrellas, toys, and bags sitting around, completely unguarded. A lot of people do it. I guess the trick is to only bring whatever is absolutely necessary to the beach (hopefully nothing too valuable!) and then simply count on people to be good, honest citizens that won’t steal your things the moment you turn your back. While it seems like most people will abide by the honour system, unfortunately, there are indeed some rotten apples that will give in to such temptations.
On the 4th of July, American Independence Day, a father went to New Smyrna Beach in Florida with his family. They had brought with them a foldable canopy, some chairs, and a bunch of toys for the kids. But after leaving their site for only a few minutes, the father returned to find two women packing away their gear. So he turned on his camera, hit record and confronted them.
“You need some help?” he asks the thieves as they’re fumbling with his canopy. “Do you know how to do it?” one of them responds. “Yeah… this is our stuff,” the father explains. The thieves initially try to talk their way out of it but they quickly lose their cool when it finally sinks in that they’ve been caught in the act, on camera.
