Hairdresser Knows Just What To Do To Calm Boy With Autism

For a parent, having a child with autism can present struggles that other parents may not have to deal with. Some children with autism are on one end of the spectrum and they interact in a way that is very similar to other children. But on the opposite side of the spectrum are children and individuals who have difficulty interacting with others and don’t tolerate situations that can be overstimulating, like loud places and activities, or places with a lot of people.

Jennifer McCafferty’s 4-year-old son Isaiah has autism. One of the things that he struggles with is getting a haircut. Having a stylist’s hand and tools close to his ears is very bothersome and the noise of the clippers can be very upsetting. But, he still needs haircuts, so mom Jennifer took him to a Sports Clips near Charleston, West Virginia. There, she met Kaylen Barker, who did something amazing for little Isaiah. As Kaylen started to cut his hair, Isaiah started to become upset, but somehow Kaylen knew just what to do.

“She sat on the floor with my baby in her lap, and she cut his hair. They talked about Dory and Christmas, and she even let him spray her with her water bottle.”

Kaylen was able to cut Isaiah’s hair, but the interaction touched Jennifer’s heart. Kaylen’s kindness and understanding meant so much to a struggling mom.

“I was ready to give up, but she wasn’t. Autism can be so very, very hard, but people like this make our days just a little easier.”

Jennifer posted her thanks on Facebook, along with this touching video. Please like and share to spread awareness and understanding for children and people with autism.
