Controversial New Law Calls For Parents To Pay Hefty Fine For Their Child’s Bullying

Bullying has always been a serious problem in our schools but with today’s technology, the bullying continues well past school grounds. Bullies will continue to torment their victims online through social media giving them no absolutely no escape. Sadly, this has led to some very lasting damage to victims and even death. While this problem has been escalating, people have realized that enough is enough and they have been trying to take a stand. Many attempts have been made to curb bullying but while there have been some successes, it remains prevalent. This has led many to question the cause of bullying: are some people simply born to be bullies? That is, is such aggression and cruelty hardwired into their brain? Or do people become bullies as a consequence of external factors?

Well, the city council in Shawan, Wisconsin appears to lean towards latter, placing the blame on the parents of bullies. As such, they’ve passed new regulations to fine parents $366 if their child is found bullying other students. A second offence within one year would result in a $681 fine. The city of Shawan is sending a clear message to parents: you will be punished for the actions of your children. With that said, the town is also hoping that this fine will also help encourage parents to begin an immediate dialog with their children since many parents are completely unaware that their child is engaging in bullying behaviour.
