I love condensed milk. Sweetened condensed milk, if you want to get technical, but I’ve literally never seen anyone use unsweetened condensed milk.
As its name suggests, condensed milk is made from cow’s milk that has been condensed through the removal of some of its water content. It’s then mixed with sugar and what you’re left with is a thick and creamy sweet product. Condensed milk is typically used in many different cuisines as a key ingredient for desserts. Personally, I’ve always enjoyed eating strawberries dipped in condensed milk and as a sweetener for my coffee. I’m drooling just thinking about it.
But here’s a really cool and surprising way to use a can condensed milk. Place the can in simmering water for about 2-3 hours, and take it out. Aaaaaand you’re done. Open up the can and you’ll find that the condensed milk has transformed into a delicious caramel. No kidding! A word of caution though: make sure that the can remains completely covered by the simmering water. If the water level starts to get low, add some boiling water.
This treat is also known as “dulce de leche” in some countries where this amazing trick is quite commonly used. It works great as a topping or sauce on cakes, muffins, cookies, waffles,, muffins, and ice creams. But feel free to get creative!
