This Dad With An Engineering Degree Vents His Frustration About ‘Common Core Math’

Common Core math was an attempt to standardize the way math was being taught to our children in school. But not everybody agreed that Common Core was the best way for children to be learning. Jeff Severt’s son came home with some math homework, including a problem about a boy named Jack  who needed to subtract 316 from 427. Using the old fashioned tried and true way of subtraction, we can quickly and easily figure out that the answer is 11. But using the Common Core approach, well… it was enough to leave an electronics engineer scratching his head. [googlead]Check out what Jeff’s father had to say about this. What do you think about this? As they say… why fix something that isn’t broken?

In case you have any problems reading the letter…

“Dear Jack, don’t feel bad. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering which included extensive study in differential equations and other higher math applications. Even I cannot explain the Common Core Mathematics approach, nor get the answer correct. In the real world, simplification is valued over complication. Therefore, 427 – 316 = 111. The answer is solved in under 5 seconds–111. The process used is ridiculous and would result in termination if used. Sincerely, Frustrated Parent.”
