Distressed Cow Grabs Man’s Attention To Rescue Calf

You never know when you might be able to lend a helping hand. It can happen when you least expect it, out of the blue. It can be obvious, or in this case, very subtle.

Dave was passing by a beautiful farm in Millbrook, Ontario, Canada, when he pulled over to snap some photos of cows grazing in the field. It was a picture perfect moment – happy brown cows meandering across green grass against a clear blue sky. Perfect photo opportunity! Dave was delighted to have found such a picturesque moment, but when he looked closer, he realized that there was a bigger reason he must have felt the urge to stop on the side of the road.

The cows have a pretty sweet setup. Rolling hills and a pond to cool down in, but to keep the herd together, there is an electric fence in place, so no one gets out and gets lost. There’s enough space for the cows to explore, so the fence seems to be just a precaution and a safety measure. Except for today, it seems like one particular cow, named Flo, managed to get herself into a little bit of trouble.

Dave didn’t notice it at first, but when he looked again, he saw the cow acting out. She didn’t appear to be calm and serene like the others. Instead, she was kicking up dirt and pacing back and forth. Dave edged closer and saw her newborn calf wedged underneath the fence. He quickly realized the distressed mama cow was trying to get his attention.

Using a stick, he tried to lift the fence so he could push the calf towards his mom. At this point, the calf is hungry and needs mom’s milk. Dave could tell that the baby was pretty new to the world because the umbilical cord looked fresh. Flo must have delivered her baby that day, but the calf rolled down the sloped ground away from her and under the fence.

There was some struggle, as both Dave and the calf suffered a few shocks from the fence, but with a little persistence, Dave was able to push the baby cow closer to her mom. And a happy reunion it was! He also made sure to inform the farmers of the new calf and to treat the umbilical cord. Talk about showing up at the right place at the right time!
