Farmer Finds Confused Hen Roosting 4 Kittens

A few years ago, I decided to start keeping chickens. We have enough space, I enjoy caring for animals, and I thought it would be nice to have fresh eggs on a regular basis. The fresh eggs are really nice and though chicken keeping has been an overall success, I had little idea what I was actually getting into. I picked up a small, premade coop, a few laying hens, and I was off and running.

Years later, I have a huge, expensive coop and a surprising knowledge of chicken keeping, health, and behavior. What I least expected, however, is how fun chickens are to own and care for. They are sweet, delightful little animals, and I can spend all day watching them scratch around the yard. They can be a bit quirky, as this chicken owner found out when he went in his coop and found something completely unexpected…

When a chicken lays eggs, she has the potential to become ‘broody’. She will sit on the eggs to keep them warm until they hatch, and even on the little chicks after they are born.

When you look under your hen, you expect to find eggs or even a fluffy brood of chicks like these. Adorable, aren’t they?

But this farmer found something else under his broody hen. Not chicks, but still adorable!

It seems the barn cat had picked a warm, soft place to have her kittens – in the henhouse. It’s safe, warm, and filled with comfy straw. Not a bad idea!

Another bonus is free babysitters! When this hen found the litter of kittens, she was more than happy to keep them warm.

The little kittens were happy to have their momma hen, but the momma cat moved them to a new place.

Fortunately, it was not long until momma hen had her own brood to look after!
