For most, going into work is an absolute drag. It means waking up early, perhaps sitting in traffic or enduring busy public transport for too long, working with coworkers that may or may not drive you absolutely insane, and spending at least eight hours a day doing tasks that, quite frankly, you’d rather not be doing.
And because of this, many spend their weekends and off days relaxing, catching up with family and friends, going out to their favourite places, or just generally taking a well-deserved rest. For Andrew Lumish however, he engages in something completely different on his one off day a week.
Andrew, who owns a mobile cleaning service, decided that one of the most important and rewarding things that he could do with his off time, is to clean the gravestones of fallen heroes. He says that one tombstone could take a total of four months to get sparkling clean, but that the effort is well worth it.
In an interview, he said, “Something bothered me. Their final resting places were total disasters. They’d been neglected from the time they’d been buried.” He added, “If [people] can’t read it at all, they can’t celebrate it, they can’t honor that person, they can’t appreciate that person. Whereas if you properly restore the monuments, you can begin an entire conversation, and potentially — in a figurative sense — bring that person back to life.”
