Non-Profit Is Operating Laundry Truck And Hot Shower Truck For Homeless

Homelessness in itself is a big issue to address. But have you ever stopped to wonder how these individuals do the basic things that we’re able to do in our very own homes? Things such as washing laundry and taking a hot shower are luxuries for those without a home to call their own. Even if a homeless individual has the money to use a laundromat and/or a public shower (e.g., at a hotel or fitness center), employees may not grant them access due to their condition.

That’s when non-profit Bayaud Enterprises in Denver, Colorado decided to address the issue themselves. To aid with the problem, the organization created two types of trucks. One truck contains six washing machines and dryers inside, so the homeless population can clean their clothes without paying a penny. The other truck, which has two wheelchair-accessible showers installed, allows them to take hot showers for free.

According to someone employed at Bayaud Enterprises, it took over a year to get the shower truck going after starting the laundry truck. But now that both facilities on wheels are now in operation, they have been a hit around the city.

“People thank us in big and small ways. We don’t have people breaking down in emotion in front of us, but they express gratitude in a lot of different ways,” one employee with the organization said.

Not only are the homeless population offered these facilities for free for up to 20 minutes, but the organization also provides them with free soap, shampoo, razors, and towels. They also provide clean shirts, underwear, and socks for those who need them.

Apart from offering hot showers and access to washing machines to homeless individuals, the Denver non-profit created a program called Denver Day Works. Via this program, those living on the streets, or at risk for such, are connected with work opportunities.

To top it off, many of the staff working for the non-profit have been homeless themselves at one point. That said, those who take advantage of Bayaud Enterprises’s offerings are able to form quick connections with the employees.

“It’s important to me because I care about Denver being an accessible place for everybody. I want the city to remain a place where people of all economic backgrounds and experiences can thrive. Just like for everybody, it feels good to have fresh laundry and a shower,” said an employee.

More non-profits need to follow in the footsteps of Bayaud Enterprises! They’re doing great things for those who are less fortunate.
