Expert Chef Explains How To Make The Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs

There are so many ways we can cook our eggs: over easy, sunny-side-up, scrambled, soft-boiled, hard-boiled, poached, the list continues. We all have our preferences. Even if someone, say, prefers their eggs scrambled, there are different levels of scrambling from a soft scramble to a hard scramble.

Due to the many ways we can cook our eggs, we might find that they don’t always come out the same the next time we make them. For instance, one day when you make hard-boiled eggs, you might discover that they’re more rubbery and chalky than they were when you made them a previous time. The length of cooking time has a lot to do with how runny or firm the yolk of your hard-boiled eggs ends up. Likewise, the length of cooking time can have a big impact on the quality of your eggs’ whites.

If you’re having trouble making hard-boiled eggs with the perfect texture and consistency, neither too firm nor too runny, you’re in luck! Chef John Mitzewich from YouTube Channel, Food Wishes, shares with us an easy way to ensure your eggs are boiled to absolute perfection.

First things first: Place your eggs in a saucepan with the water level at one inch above the eggs.

Simmer the saucepan over high heat until the water starts to bubble, and the eggs begin to move around a little. Once the water bubbles, turn the heat off and place a lid on top of your saucepan while it remains on the burner. Let it sit for 17 minutes. During these 17 minutes, refrain from lifting the lid.

Afterward, Chef John instructs that we then empty the hot water from the pan and replace it with cold water to cool down the pan. Then pour that water out, replacing it with a new batch of cold water for the eggs to sit in for 20 minutes.

Once the time is up, remove the eggs and peel them under running water. Enjoy them now or later!

According to Chef John, “You slice in, and you have the most perfect hard-boiled eggs ever. The whites are firm but not rubbery, [and] the yolks are cooked but still creamy…”

The expert also explains that his hard-boiled egg recipe will ensure you have the “most delicious Easter eggs in the neighborhood.” Or, if you’re whipping up dishes in the summer, you’ll have the best egg salad, potato salad, or other summery dish containing boiled eggs. Yum!
