Airline Employee Sings “You Raise Me Up” To Mother Of Fallen Soldier During Flight

As a parent, it’s exciting, nerve-wracking, and bittersweet watching your offspring go from an infant who can’t talk or walk to a full-grown adult taking charge of their own life. As scary as it can be seeing our children transform into mature, independent individuals, it’s even more nail-biting to discover that your child wants to join a profession that’s considered dangerous whether it be a police officer, firefighter, or even a solider.

Regardless, we should still be very proud of our children when they choose a brave career path. However, no parent wants to get a call that their son or daughter has passed away while on duty, even though their sacrifice was for a good cause.

Devastated is one of many words to describe the mother of Tyler Edenhofer, a fallen soldier who passed away on July 25, 2018. Mother Debbie boarded a Southwest Airlines airplane to attend a ceremony in Kentucky to honor her son and his service. Tyler was going to have a bench dedicated to him in Skyview Park in Jeffersontown.

Initially, everything on the plane was going as expected, that is until an unusual announcement was made over the plane’s speaker by the airline’s operations agent, Scott Wirt.

Scott began singing “You Raise Me Up” by Secret Garden to show respect for the mother of the fallen soldier. Passenger Sean Warren pulled out his phone to record part of the performance and posted the clip on Facebook. After posting the video on social media about three weeks ago, it has since earned 170,000 views and counting.

“I just want you to know I think we should have more interruptions like this. In fact, it is no interruption at all. It actually makes things quite clear. And it shares, in a public way, a private burden this family carries,” said Sean in response to the beautiful act he was able to witness in person.

Viewers too had warm hearts and heavy tears as they watched the video clip: “Caring is such a low priority in today’s society. The daily grind and hustle is all that’s important to people, it seems. But slowing down and caring for each other, especially in moments like this make everyday count. Thank you for sharing. Thank you to the trooper and his mom and dad and family for their sacrifice,” says one commenter.

Scott’s song will surely make an impact for not only Debbie and her family but also for thousands of others who come across the video and can relate themselves.
