I’m going to be honest with you: as much as I enjoy the performance arts, I’m just not that sophisticated. Sometimes there will be a performance that’s so out there that I just won’t get it. I might be told by a so-called aficionado that it’s a brilliant performance so I’ll smile and nod, but inside my head, I’m thinking “what the heck did I just watch?” It’s not that I’m not cultured or educated, I guess I just can’t always grasp how art works!
That being said, there are times, however, where a performance manages to touch my soul and captivate me.
Sometimes there will be a performance that is just so imaginative and just so incredible that it’s impossible to not see the sheer genius behind it. This level of creativity is getting increasingly rare so when you finally get to see it, prepare to be completely blown away. And friends, this is one of those times.
What you’re about to see is a jaw-dropping dance to Kim Walker-Smith’s Spirit Break Out.
It’s a mix of dancing and projection art that when put together is a brilliant display of wonder and enchantment. How they designed this production, I’ll never know but its ethereal movement is nothing short of something supernatural. They created a knockout performance that has everyone cheering and clapping. Once you see it, you’ll know exactly why.
The choreography and music are timed magically, giving way to a tight production that is like no other. Starting slowly on a dark stage with ambient lighting, two young ladies begin posing with balls of light. The balls of light follow their movement and as the ladies begin to dance, the balls of light transform into some absolutely stunning displays! It’s hard to tear your eyes away.
Between the dancing, projections that move with the dancers, music and heartfelt planning behind all of this, you can’t help but feel uplifted as your eyes drink in the beauty before you. This is art, and I may not understand, but I sure as heck feel it and appreciate it. Isn’t that the point?
