13-Year-Old Builds 89-Square-Foot Home

As kids get older, they often want a little more privacy than they did as little children. It’s normal for a pre-teen or teenager to start doing things to establish their independence. For example, it can start with small things like them walking to school with their friends as opposed to wanting your company. They’ll also spend more time in their room chatting with their peers and doing things they like; maybe they’ll demand that you stay out of their room more often than not!

Maybe they shut their bedroom door more often or spend less time with the family. They may spend time at a friend’s house or engrossed in homework, sports, or other hobbies. Most kids have a busy schedule filled with activities, and that may take even more time away from their family.

But, few kids of that age, no matter how independent they are, have their own home. Actually, no child I know at that age has a home, and if they DO (which I think is impossible), then none have built that house on their own. We’ve heard of kids having clubhouses and hangouts, but making your living space takes dedication that even some adults don’t have.

Luke Thill, a 13-year-old from Dubuque, Iowa, is not like most kids. He wanted space, so he built it with his own hands in his parents’ backyard. Luke stated that he was bored during the summer, and that’s when he decided to take on the project. Most young boys would be busy on their phones or play video games, but Luke wanted to do something unique.

It wasn’t an easy process, but the teenager never gave up. It took almost a year to gather the money and materials he needed. It cost about $1500 to build the tiny house, and he earned the money mowing lawns and running errands. He also scavenged for recycled materials. The 89-square-foot house is 10 feet long and 5 1/2 feet wide, with electricity but no plumbing.

Luke did receive things from his parents, both in materials and the building of the house. They were happy to support their son in a meaningful project that he worked incredibly hard to accomplish. There has been lots of interest in Luke’s little place, and he hopes to inspire others his age.

What did you think of Luke’s handy work?
