Obviously, most of the people here have never dealt with sleep issues... at one point I had 3 very loud alarms, spaced all around the room. There was no way to turn them off without getting out of bed. Yet I would often wake up hours after the time they were set for. Mom would tell me that she heard the alarms, heard me turn them off. But I had absolutely NO memory of it. It wasn't being lazy. I would basically sleepwalk, turning them off without ever actually waking up. Mom had to make sure I got up when things were scheduled (school for instance). Then, sometime in my early 20's, it stopped. I still often have sleep issues, but it's a different variety now. The thing is, if anyone had bothered to take me to a doctor who specializes in sleep disorders, maybe my mom wouldn't have needed to help me. All too often, primary care doctors don't want to admit that they lack specific knowledge, and anything beyond basic care should be referred to the proper specialist. But it's just so much easier to blame the kid, label her "lazy", or "uncooperative". SMH.
