People Share The Creepiest Thing They Witnessed While On The Road

Having your driver’s license is a privilege, not a right. But sometimes, that shiny piece of plastic feels like a one-way ticket to a world full of strange occurrences, inexplicable visions, and downright terrifying moments. When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you never know what to expect. Sometimes a no-traffic drive on a beautiful sunny day is just too darn hard to ask for. Between shaking your fists at red lights, struggling against endless traffic and wishing the person in front of you weren’t the human reincarnation of a Galapagos tortoise, the majority of time luck just isn’t on your side.
But if you go about your day practically unscathed (save for a bruised ego), consider yourself lucky. Because while we’re frustratingly going about our daily commute, others are having the worst day of their lives.

The stories we’ve gathered show us just how bizarre your day could get in a split second. Some of these are tales of caution, while others just make us scratch our heads in puzzlement. A handful shows us how it feels like to be a helpless bystander of bone-chilling freeway accidents.

But the majority of them are just plain spooky! Here are some of the weirdest, creepiest, most jaw-dropping things these people have witnessed on the road.

27. He Avoided The World’s Creepiest Scam EVER

Pixabay

“I was driving a shortcut from Twentynine Palms, CA to Albuquerque, NM. Twentynine Palms is located in the desolate high desert east of LA. The shortcut was all two-lane road through total nothingness, except for passing through Amboy, CA. Amboy is a nearly abandoned town nearly as far below sea level as Death Valley, with a dormant volcano and lava field on one side and a salt flat on the other. It was also, at the time, a hotspot for satanic group activity.

So I was driving by myself in the afternoon. I stopped in Amboy and snapped a picture of the city sign, just to prove I was there to friends who dared me to take that route to I-40.

I got back in my car and proceeded to drive up into the mountain range between Amboy and I-40.
Once I reach the top I am driving north through a canyon with high grass on both sides of the road. Up ahead I see some stuff in the middle of the road. As I approach I slow down to see a red Pontiac Fiero stopped sideways across both lanes, a suitcase open with clothes scattered everywhere and two bodies laying face down in the road, a man and a woman.

I stop a hundred feet or so away and the hair on the back of my neck is standing up.

Being a Marine, I reach under the seat and pull out a 9mm pistol and chamber a round. Something seemed very wrong, it looked too perfect as if it were staged. An ambush? Was I being paranoid? Something was just wrong. Getting out of the car seemed unthinkable, it was the horror movie move.
As I scanned the road I saw a line I could drive. Pass the guy in the road on his left, swerve to the right side of the woman, behind the Fiero and I’d be on the other side. I dropped it into first gear, punched it and drove the line I planned.

I passed the back of the Fierro without hitting it or either of the bodies in the road. I continued forward a couple of hundred feet and slowed down so I could breathe and let my heart slow down. As I looked up into the rearview mirror I saw that the two bodies had gotten up to their knees and twenty or so people emerged from the tall grass on either side of the road by the car and bodies.
At that moment my right foot smashed the gas pedal to the floor and did not let up until I had to slowdown for the I-40 east onramp.

I will never know what would have happened to me had I gotten out of the car to check on the bodies or stopped my car closer to them. Somehow I do not think it would have been good. Sometimes real life can be scarier than a movie.” echo5juliet

26. He Can’t Even Explain The Thing He Saw

Pixabay

“A good friend of mine told me this story years ago. He is the stereotypical old big bad trucker. I’ve seen some weird stuff with him while driving in South Texas along the border. He never batted an eye, but while telling me this story he had goosebumps and a concerned expression, which from this guy is about the equivalent of a trembling lip and crud-stained pants.

I’ll tell this story in the first person as he told it to me.

Years ago in the late ’90s, I was on my way from the house (central Texas) heading to Laredo to pick up a load. It was early morning, around 4 or 5. I had just come off a string of days at home, so I know I wasn’t tired.

I am on one of those two-lane winding roads in the absolute middle of nowhere when I see something on the side of the road at the edge of my high beams. At first, I just thought it was roadkill, as is usually the case.

As I get closer, I see that it is roadkill AND there’s someone crouching over the deer carcass. I remember thinking either this guy’s taking the antlers as a trophy, or he’s sick. As I got closer still I can now see that’s this guy’s eating the freaking deer. He’s pulling chunks of meat from the stomach and bringing them up to his face. At this point, he stops mid-motion and looks up at me. Not at my truck, but at me. He/it stands up and that’s when I see that it’s huge, brown, and covered in hair. I remember thinking at this point, oh no.

This thing is standing on the tiny shoulder looking at me. By this point, maybe 3 seconds have passed and I’m about to the point in the road he’s standing at. I didn’t even think of stopping, in fact, I’m starting to lay on it and get the hell out of there. As I’m passing it, it’s looking at me, again not at the truck, it’s looking through the driver’s side windshield at me. He obviously has the intelligence to know that there’s a driver in here and knows where I’m sitting. As I start to pass him I can still see its head above the hood of an old needle nose Pete (an old truck design where the hood goes straight out from the windshield, known for being tall and difficult to see around).

This thing is a freaking giant. I remember seeing what looked like human intelligence in its eyes. It scared the hell out of me.” JimBobPaul
25. He Has A Reason To Believe In Angels

Pixabay

“My dad told me and my brothers this story when we were growing up and it’s always stuck with me, particularly on long drives when I’m feeling a bit sleepy. The first time I remember hearing it was after I asked him if angels were real, I was probably 7 or 8 yo.

He drove trucks decades ago, before I was born and before labor laws around limits and breaks were more standard (I’m assuming it’s different now?).

He’d fairly regularly accept calls that would extend his shift to where he was driving 24, 36hrs, or more without a break longer than a quick bathroom or fast food stop.
My dad has a pretty mathematical brain, he’s the type to make up logic puzzles out of something totally mundane just for fun. Whenever we were driving around town, he’d regularly ask me things like how long would it take us to get from home to the store if we were going 30 mph but had to stop for 5 minutes in the middle because a family of kittens were crossing the road, etc.

He’d come up with similar equations for himself while he was driving solo that involved things he was seeing like the odometer, mileage markers, the time, and then he could test his speed based on the equation, etc.
One night after having already driven a particularly long day, he noticed his eyes getting droopier and the whole roll-down-the-window-and-blast-the-music-up thing didn’t seem to be helping much. It was a rainy night on a pretty windy mountain road without a shoulder to pull over safely, so he started doing those logic games out loud to keep alert and awake. He was saying something to the effect of “I just passed mile marker 146 so what time will it be when I reach 200 if I’m going 55mph…” then he closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and felt his head do the nod-jerk thing which woke him up with a gasp.

He opened his eyes to see he was driving straight towards mile marker 158, which would have sent his whole truck tumbling down a random ass mountain ravine. He was able to correct the course safely back, but it was a matter of seconds between that reality and certain death.
He insists to this day that he slept through 12 miles of windy mountain road going 60+ mph, only to wake up right at the last moment between life and death.

The story usually ends with him tearing up saying, ‘I don’t know if there are angels, but I know there’s something bigger going on in this universe than our human brains have been able to understand yet.

If I wouldn’t have woken up right when I did, you kids wouldn’t be here today and that’s something that feels pretty close to spiritual.’” pepitawu

24. He Got Caught Up With The Swarm

Pixabay

“Maybe a bit off the mark but it still scared the hell out of me. I was headed west on I-76 here in Denver just cruising along at about 70mph. Out of nowhere, I saw a massive, almost solid cloud of what looked to be dirt coming at me. I’d say it was at least 20 feet wide and 10 feet tall. I scanned ahead of me but couldn’t see any vehicle it could have come from.

With nowhere to go, I slowed down and took the hit, hoping there wasn’t anything big enough in there to come through the windshield or jack up my truck (owner/operator). It was pretty loud as I smashed through it, the instant it hit I knew it wasn’t dirt though. I immediately hit the washers because I couldn’t see a damn thing through all of the carnage, my windshield was painted with guts. Turns out it was bees, freaking huge bees that sounded like rocks when they hit. I can’t even imagine seeing that swarm if I was walking, they would kill the hell out of anything in their path.” Pirate_Freder
23. He Passed Himself On The Road

Pixabay

“A friend of my cousin was a long haul trucker.

He was making a delivery across the country and was in a hardly used dirt stretch of a rural route. Since the road wasn’t exactly peachy, he had to drive slowly. He sees another truck slowly approaching from the opposite direction, and he sees the truck is the same as his.

Since this isn’t fairly uncommon, he didn’t think much of it but as the other one grew closer he decided to honk in recognition of having the same kind of truck. The other one replies and all is good.
That is until they narrowly and very slowly had to pass one another.

He turned to look at the driver and he saw himself. Not a reflection, not a similar person but his exact same copy, same clothes, same hat, same red beard, staring at him. They passed each other and that was that.

He told me he’d seen very weird things, but that was the moment he decided to stop being a trucker.” Aquatermain

22. She Had No Face

Pablo Charnas

“My dad has told me this story a couple of times and each time it always kind of weirds me out. He is not a trucker but when he was in the military one night he and a buddy went out to get food.

About halfway into their drive down a dark road my dad and his buddy noticed a woman in a red dress with black hair walking.
My dad and his buddy found it odd because it didn’t seem safe and it wasn’t that warm. My dad said deep down he knew stopping was a bad idea and so the drove by a little more slowly to get a glimpse to see if she needed help. As the drove by my dad and his friend both swear she has no face. Instead, there was just a black hole as if she had been in a wreck and her face was taken off.

It freaked them both out so badly my dad floored it and when they stopped to eat both of them agreed they saw the same thing. Come to find out a woman had been killed earlier that year in an accident. They were talking about it when a stranger told them the sightings of the woman we’re actually common.
I am not one to believe in the paranormal but the story is still kind of weird.” Amagora

Another User Comments:

“I’ve heard the same ‘no face’ story multiple times over the years. Either it’s a common optical illusion, common delusion, or common thing for ghosts to do.” Calvarez

21.  He Saw A Woman Who Looked Like She Was Caught Between Our World And Another

Pixabay

“I live in Spokane which is about 45 min away from Coeur d’Alene.

I was driving back from my aunts in the dark one night and just hit a massive wall of fog. I turn the corner and a whole herd of deer come running down the road toward me. I slow down a lot so I don’t hit them. Then after another few seconds, I see a woman standing in the street-facing away from me with dirty clothes. The area I was in is known to have drug addicts so I cracked the window and called out to her and asked if she needed me to call anyone. As soon as I spoke her head whipped around and it looked like she was a burn victim; huge lidless eyes, no eyebrows, Voldemort nose, and a mouth that looked like it was melted or sewn up or something.

Then she ran off into the woods and I drove a lot faster than I should have home.” Cal0965
20. He Got A Little More Than He Bargained For On His Late Night Walk

“Not a trucker, but I ran on to something creepy on a road and I have a picture of it too.

My friend and I were coming back from a concert one night and were taking a shortcut through this area that was being worked on, so there wasn’t really anyone around because it was late and the streets were closed.

As we’re crossing this small bridge, I looked up and saw what appeared to be a zombie rat jumping at my face.

Scared the hell out of me. Turns out that someone had taken a mummified rat or squirrel and used wire to position it midair on that bridge.
Here is the picture I snapped of it on the crummy flip phone I had. The combination of that and the abandoned atmosphere of the construction area was so freaking creepy that we ran until we hit a busy street.” -eDgAR-

19. He Saw The Skies Open And Flip On And Off

Pixabay

“I was driving through Kansas on I-70 at night once when I hit one of the craziest thunderstorms I’ve ever seen. It was so bad the road started flooding a bit and I had to pull into a service plaza and wait it out when the creepy part happened.

As I was sitting in the truck watching the storm, there is a series of lightning strikes followed by a blackout. Suddenly, a massively bright light starts moving behind the clouds, too slowly to be an aircraft but too fast to be part of the storm system. It moves up over the hills and trees before crossing directly overhead then disappears a bit behind the service plaza. The transit from the tree line to plaza took maybe 5-10 minutes tops, and while it was overhead, it cast everything in an eerie blue glow and lit up the parking lot. I seriously thought aliens were invading or something.

Anyway, I kid you not within 10 minutes of the creepy light disappearing the rain completely stopped and the parking lot lights came back on like someone flipped a switch. I got the hell outta there while looking in my mirrors for spaceships or those alien walkers from the war of the worlds.
If anyone has any thoughts on wtf that might’ve been I’m all ears. The memory still bugs me as I’m not prone to conspiracy theories or crazy outlandish beliefs or anything. I’ve considered stuff like ball lightning, refracted sunlight (it wasn’t long after sunset), or even military aircraft (it was somewhat near an airbase), but none of those seem quite right for how massive the light behind the clouds was, how localized to a specific part of the sky it was, and the speed at which it moved.” MrFuzzybagels

18. He Witnessed A Ghost K-9 Unit Reporting For Spooking

Pixabay

“Okay, so here is a spook for you, and to this day I still have no idea WTF.

So I was in the Virginia area and had a lot of work-related sites ranging from downtown Baltimore to Virginia Beach and all around.

Friday wrapped up, and I hit the road to some social arrangements I had made for the weekend. Spent the weekend with friends out in various parts of VA, got dragged off to other places even further out, the usual weekend fun times.

It’s late Sunday night when I have to leave, or I’m not going to be able to get home in time to start my thankfully late afternoon on Monday. I’m fully rested, I didn’t do any drinking, I’m not into drugs.

On the highway at about 3 AM, in the middle of nowhere between Roanoke and DC, absolutely nobody around. I’m cruising along in the left lane simply because nobody else is around. No headlights for the past hour, no tail lights either. No road lamps either. It’s dark, it’s mildly damp, it’s foggy. I have the music up, I’m feeling good, all is fine.

And then I just happen to look to the left and there is a dog barking at me. A German Shepard, in a car passenger seat, somewhat blue-glow from the instruments inside the car, and its got its face to its window and its barking its head off at me.

I get a good hard look at it, too, because at first, my brain is not registering ‘cop car, dummy!’
I’m doing 90+ in a 75, I promptly have the ‘oh hell!’ moment when the dog, the instruments, the white crown Vic/light bar all click in my brain after a second hard look. I put my foot on the brakes and start slowing down hard but safe, to pull over. I even put my blinker on to start shifting lanes over to the right to pull over because –

WAIT. There is no shoulder on the left side of this road!

I look back to my left (where there is still no shoulder/room for another car!), and it’s just gone.

No trace. I slammed my brakes and stopped in the middle of the freaking highway, flipped on all my light bars and even looked around with my handheld spot.. there was NOTHING. No tail lights, no headlights, no engine sounds, nothing. There are no other tire marks in the damp but mine, and I can see for a nice long-distance both ways, too. Nothing.
My vehicle had great visibility, and a lot of extra lighting (offroad SUV with the trimmings.), there is no possible way somebody pulled a sneaky, let alone drove that fast on wet sloped grass and rocks on my left side.

So.. Yep, there you have it. Ghost cop and his dog didn’t like me speeding, apparently.” The-Gargoyle

17. He Was Surrounded By Fog And Shadows Darting Around His Car

Pixabay

“I was driving through the back roads of Arkansas around 3 am. Suddenly, I hit a dense fog bank. It was so thick that I knew I should have pulled off the road because I could barely see in front of me, but sometimes pulling over can be just as dangerous. So I slow to about 20mph and put my hazards on. I see no other cars coming from the other way or behind me.

After about 15 minutes I start seeing humanoid shadows illuminated by my headlights darting around the sides of the road and across it. It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I saw maybe 5 or six of them. Never got a good look, all I saw were shadows darting back and forth but they were definitely human-shaped. Needless to say, I was freaked out and wanted to get away. I speed up a bit and after about 5 minutes, I came out of the fog bank. It ended just as suddenly as it came. I speed away at my allotted 65mph and didn’t stop till the sun came up.” Radioactivegrits
16. He Captured Something No One Else Saw

Pixabay

“I worked for a TV station back in the early 2000s.

I traveled with some of the reporters to calls to do still photography for web and assist the reporter/photog team if needed. I was basically an on-site producer.

We normally didn’t cover traffic too much but one of the main arteries out of the county was completely closed due to an accident, so we spent like 30 minutes going down dirt roads and backcountry lanes to get around it and to the site to cover why half the county was basically locked down (there were only a few bridges).
I get there and old Lincoln had run a stop sign resulting in it getting t-boned by a massive dump truck.

When we go there EMT, Fire, and Police were on the scene but no one was moving fast at all. No rush to clear the scene or anything. That means fatality and possible criminal investigation.

I start shooting scenes of the traffic, a few tasteful wide shots showing the wall of traffic stretching out as far as the eye can see, etc. But for records I also shot a shot of the dump truck and car, so that when they write the story they can get the details correct, not something for the public.
The reporter shoots her piece, we get statements from the cops on the scene, and go on to the next story…

I get back to the station and start processing my photos when I see something in the back window of the car.

Zoom in, its the woman’s face twisted and broken, mouth open in what looks like a scream.

That face has haunted me for the rest of my life. I’ve done stories about killers, I’ve done a story where a bus full of high school kids fell 30 feet off an overpass killing 4 of them even saw them screaming coming out of the wreckage. Nothing comes close to that woman’s face.” Team_Braniel
15. He Didn’t Even Know He Was Robbed

Pixabay

“Missouri, I stopped at an off-ramp to stretch out and take a breather. As I’m smoking a cigarette, a little girl from some direction I couldn’t figure out giggles and says ‘Hi, mister!’ My initial reaction was, ‘The f*ck is a little kid doing out here at this time?’ so I talk back and say hi.

She then responds with, ‘My mommy says you’ll be ok, don’t worry!’ Now utterly confused, I ask her what she means. No response. Then suddenly I feel like somebody is standing next to me, but it doesn’t feel negative or bad. It just feels like somebody is right there next to me. Since it didn’t have a negative vibe to it, I just finished my cigarette and left. Later on down the road, I realize that I forgot to fuel up at my last stop when the warning light came on. So I scramble to look at my GPS and find the nearest truck stop, I find one and set the course.

As I roll up to the truck stop, my truck starts sputtering and I barely make it to the fuel line before the truck starts dying. I ran out of fuel right as I got on the fuel line. It wasn’t until I was fueling up that it occurred to me what the hell happened at my last stop.” [deleted]

14. This Person Has A Highway Deathwish

Pixabay

“Two friends and I had to drive from Laredo, TX to Baton Rouge, LA one night in my Ford van. It was about 2 am. There is a particularly long and dark section of the highway just outside Laredo.

No buildings, towns or lights for about 50 miles. I was in the right lane coming up on a truck and pulled out into the left passing lane. As I was slowly overtaking this long truck, my peripheral vision caught a sudden movement of this big truck towards the right shoulder. I saw the truck was swerving to avoid hitting a person dressed in all white with a white face whose arms were folded across the chest and eyes were closed as they walked across the highway. I swerved to the left and barely missed this ghostly looking person with my passenger mirror.

I can still remember seeing that the eyes were closed, that’s how close we came to hitting this person…” Flashdman
13. When Her Gut Said Don’t Stop, She Listened To It

Pexels

“I was 23, my newly married husband and I decided driving team would be a fun adventure after college – rather than jumping into the 9-5.

I was down in Arizona, on a long stretch of nothing about 4 am when a guy pulled up next to me waving his CB radio (I never left mine on, listening to those guys talk crap  was irritating.)

I turned on my CB and he told me I had a blown tire.

I thanked him, figuring I would stop at the next truck stop.

He kept harassing me to pull over and check my tire for a good 40 miles.
I finally got to the next town at the pilot truck stop, got out and checked my truck. No blown tires anywhere.

No clue what that guy would’ve done to me, but so glad I trusted my gut and didn’t stop.” GozyNYR

12. He Wants To Know; Was It Military Testing Or Top-Secret Transport?

Pixabay

“I was driving near Las Vegas at around 3 am. I had been following a few black SUVs along the highway for a good hour or so.

They had Nevada plates that were single-digit numbers in order, 1,2,3. Suddenly they all pulled off the highway down a dirt path. There was no mile marker or cactus that would indicate a path there. It was just dirt. After pulling off the road they all turned their lights off. I didn’t stick around. It was creepy.” Valor592

“According to the DMVNV website, ‘Special license plates are also issued to a number of Nevada law enforcement agencies, state elected officials and the Nevada congressional delegation. Plate “1” belongs to the Nevada Governor. “2” belongs to the Lieutenant Governor.’ jeruhmee

11. They Still Tell The Story Of “Till Death Do Us Part”

Lukas Rychvalsky

“My mom, sister and I were on our way to a baseball game of mine during my junior year of high school.

This was in northern New York so spring got a little chilly at times. The main road we took stretched about 35 miles and was nothing but cornfields and tree lines. We hit a stretch of the road that was super foggy for no reason so my mom slowed down to a proper speed. We finally reached the end of the fog and we all looked to the left to see where we were. About 50 yards from the road was a man and woman in what appeared to be wedding clothing from at least 100 years ago (man wearing a big top hat and the woman wearing a very old looking white dress) holding hands with their backs to us walking towards the wood-line.

We drove past and I just remember the silence in the car until my mom said: ‘What on earth was that?’ Till this day whenever we are together and one of us tells the story we all get goosebumps.” LuckyLuciano19

10. He Should Have Known To Not Stop On Route 666

Pixabay

“Not a long haul trucker but I was crossing the Navajo Nation on my way to Colorado in the ’90s. It was around 1 am and I was really tired so I pulled over between Gallup and Ship Rock. Had a nightmare of evil-looking faces coming at me out of pitch black, screaming.

I woke up started my car and when I turned on my headlights there was a coyote and a jackrabbit sitting about 10 feet apart just on the edge of the light. Never had a nightmare like that before or since. I have traveled that route a few times but never stopped after dark again.” Scuta44

9. He Hit A Woman Who Couldn’t Die

Pixabay

“Not sure if I’ve told this before on here or not? But this is my Dad’s story. Just to explain, he’s ex British Army, not scared of anything and super practical.
He became a truck driver in 1975 I think this was not long after he started.

So this happened at about 5 am on a summer’s day. It was a bit misty like you get some mornings early but bright, and he was heading out of London on the A3.

He’s driving his truck, and up ahead was a young woman, early 20s in a long blue dress standing by the side of the road. It must have been before the A3 was dueled, and all the barriers were put up.

So Dad sees her, thinks she’s waiting for a ride to work. Just as he’s about to go past her, she jumps in front of his lorry. He immediately slams on the breaks, as he’s sure he’s hit her, but he didn’t feel a bang but where else could she be?
A couple of cars stop to see what’s going on, Dad shakily explains and the drivers kindly offer to stay while he looks for her under the lorry.

Dad looks, and she’s not there. Other drivers look and there’s nothing. Nobody, no blood, no sign of anyone. They all freak out a bit and then decide leaving asap is a great idea!

He can’t explain it, he knows she was there and he hit her. He spent the rest of his driving career avoiding that route.” Mischeese

8. He Encountered A Large Cry Heard In Unison

Pexels

“I was in rural Maine looking for a lumber mill just before sunset. It took hours to get out there because Maine is riddled with these narrow windy roads that try and get as close as possible to every building in every village from US 1 to Canada.

So I pull in just as the last guy is leaving, I ask him where to park and say I’ll see him in the morning. I park my truck in this fairly large gravel parking lot with thick forest along all the sides. There are no visible artificial lights except for my truck and my flashlight. After I get parked I go and sit out in a lawn chair and just enjoy the warm night air and look at the absolutely beautiful night sky. It was a rare treat to enjoy basically no light pollution.
As I’m looking at the stars, like a switch was flipped, what sounds like fifty coyotes, sixty feet away, start howling like mad.

It is at this point I nope right back into the truck and didn’t open the door until sunrise.

The town of West Salem, Wisconsin as always kind of given me the shivers. It’s like it’s both empty and full of people at the same time. Nothing concrete just feels like things aren’t quite right in that town.” KnightFox

7. He Stopped Mid-Stream When The Tree Started To Shake

Pixabay

“First, middle of the night with a buddy and we pulled off to the side of the highway to take a p*ss and switch drivers. Nobody else around on the road. I walk to the side, pitch black, whip it out and start to pee.

My buddy is just stretching his back or whatever. I heard something in the woods shake a tree. No other way to describe it, a tree about 30 feet away shook. Then I hear something BIG crashing through the woods coming straight for us and the car. My buddy and I don’t even say anything, he dives in the driver side and I jump through the passenger window, pants still down. He floors it out of there, legs and pants dangling outside. Never did see anything in the rearview mirror but there was something out there coming at us. My buddy likes to say he heard me stop peeing when that tree shook.” Thomas_XX
6. He Saw A Mannequin Just Hanging Out

Pixabay

“Weeeellll, I’m not a trucker, but a motorcyclist which kinda makes it even more spooky.

Drove home from my girlfriend’s house, just a 20min ride but it was 3 am and the road goes through a forest without any street lights. So I ride through the forest, already giving everything my little 50ccm dirt bike had in it back then and suddenly on the side of the road, a freaking naked mannequin is standing. I saw it appear in my headlights and drove by it only doing like 60 kmh, it was scary as hell. A freaking mannequin standing there naked on the side of a dark road in a forest at 3 am in the morning.

Damn, I still get the shivers…” Koko_san
5. He Saw The Grim Reaper, Who Did Him A Favor

Pixabay

“When I was doing the long haul thing, I was driving through Oklahoma, don’t remember exactly where, but it was late at night, and I was already tired. Well, I was driving along and saw what I thought was a grim reaper, looked in my mirrors and didn’t see it. At that point, I decided that, regardless of how many hours I have left on my log, I’m stopping the next chance I get to rest. Later that night after getting parked, I turned on my CB radio and heard someone talking about a bad accident just a few miles beyond where I had stopped.

After asking how long ago it happened, it turned out that if I had kept going, I would have been caught up in it.” Deeluna
Another User Comments:

“For my work, I have to regularly drive by a bad part of town.

One day, as God is my witness, I saw the Reaper or a Reaper-like figure. I’m driving with some customers when I see this figure standing by a ‘One-Way’ sign. It’s draped in what looks like a tattered dirty cloak or large blanket or something. Now, this isn’t unusual because this area has all sorts of crazy homeless walking around with blankets so I didn’t think twice…initially.

This is normally a street I turn down as it shaves a minute or two off of my drive. But the figure pointed past the turn. Like ‘Go that way’ type pointing.
It was then I realized, this figure was equal in height to the One-Way sign. Which is like 12-13 feet tall. My jaw drops as I drive by this thing and look right at it. I didn’t make my usual turn and went the other way.

A bit later, I drove by the same area and down the street, the cops had some yellow tape up. There was a shooting nearby apparently.” InferiousX

4. He Knows The Trucker Code By Heart

Markus Spiske

“Not a trucker, but I remember seeing a TV show or something where this trucker said in the 80s or 90s (I can’t remember) he pulled off in a rest stop in a Southern state at 3 am.

He said truckers stick together like a family, especially if one needs help with their gear/truck, they help each other out whenever they can. Anyways, he said he’s getting ready to sleep and some guy starts knocking on his truck door, so he rolls the window down and this guy says he’s a trucker that is having some engine problems and was able to park his truck way down at the other end of the lot. This guy at his door then asks if he can come help have a look at his truck. The trucker on the show said he thought it was odd because truckers usually just call their 24/7 roadside mechanic service that will try to fix your truck wherever you are and if they can’t, a new semi will pick up your load and your truck will be towed to the nearest diesel repair shop.

He said that was the first red flag. He told the guy at his door, sure, I have to get some things and I’ll meet you over there, so just start walking back (basically to get the guy to get lost). The guy at his door says okay thanks and disappears down the lot. The trucker on the show said he then realized he was the only truck in the entire lot and that this guy wasn’t a trucker, so he turned on his rig and hauled a*s out of there. He then notified other truckers in the area to avoid that stop and gave a description of the guy.

I don’t think the guy was ever caught, but his intentions were obviously bad, and apparently this was a common thing at the time…basically psychos making crap up at truck stops to take advantage of unknowing truckers just trying to have a rest.” [deleted]

3. They Must Have Thought They Were Driving A Horse, Not A Truck

“I was in deep south Texas coming out of Laredo. A Mexican truck (you can spot one easy when you know what to look for) starts coming up alongside me. He gets up next to me and no one is at the wheel. I see two straps on the wheel and can only assume the dude was attempting to drive from the sleeper with a set of reigns.

I backed way off and let them get on up ahead of me. Saw them (three of these clowns in one truck) later at the border check on 35 in cuffs.” KingofSpeedSR71
2. His Sixth Sense Came In Handy And Saved His Life

Lukas Rychvalsky

“This is my Father’s story and he wasn’t a long haul trucker but rather an 18-year-old gas station attendant in the late 70s and without a certain Long Haul Trucker I probably wouldn’t be here:

The gas station was 24 hours and my Dad was the only one working the night shift (11-7 I think). A guy comes in and just gives him the creeps.

Seems sketchy. He was wearing a tight jacket/pants and you could tell he had something in his pants under the jacket. It was during the summer and was warm so why is he wearing a jacket to begin with? It was later confirmed he was on drugs.
A lot of truck drivers used this station as it was the only one open 24 hours for a long stretch of the highway. They also had a big lot where they let truckers park and sleep or take a break.

On this night at this time, it was just my dad, sketchy dude, and one trucker in there he kinda knew (as in, came in frequently enough to be conversational) and asked if he’d stay in the station and hang out until sketchy dude left.

Well, after ‘looking’ at the stocked shelves for several minutes while sneaking peeks at my dad behind the counter, the sketchy guy eventually looked fed up and got into his blue car and sped off. The cool trucker guy hung out with my dad a little longer until another couple of guys came in to use the booths to eat a sandwich.
I should also point out this was pretty middle-of-nowhere rural the Southeast United States and the 1970’s. CB radio and landline was it. My dad only had a landline in the store. Dad did not have any protection or weapon of any kind.

So the hours pass and my dad had shaken off the paranoia when all of a sudden this truck driver guy in a car comes hauling as* into the lot, jumps out, and sprints into the store hollering he needs a phone. He didn’t have a CB radio nor did he see a phone at the other station. He also wasn’t familiar with the area and my Dad’s station was the first place he found.
Calls 911 to report that he had walked in on a gas station 40 miles back (next closest station) to find the attendant shot and dead. No one else around.

And the only other piece of information is that a blue car was speeding out of the lot when the trucker pulled in.

Apparently they eventually apprehend the guy in the blue car, my dad confirms it was the sketchy dude from earlier in the night, and they charge him with murder and armed robbery.

To the long haul trucker who waited around with my dad that night, thanks and hope you’re keeping it real.
Also worth adding that apparently sketchy guy in the blue car was already a bad apple who was either being looked for or on probation or something. He was in the system.” TuchmanMarsh

1. She Made The Right Decision When She Put Her Foot Down

“Not a trucker, but definitely creepy on the road: Back in the early/mid-1970s my mother and I lived in the pacific northwest.

I was about 6 years old.

We were on an offbeat road right out of Seattle. Very dark night, no moon and a wisp of fog.

We saw a Volkswagen Beetle on the side of the road with their emergency flashers on and a rather good looking guy ( as my mom describes him ) with his arm in a sling waving us down … My mom pulled over being the kind of woman that would help anybody in need and he looked normal.
Mom rolled down her window and asked if she could help and the guy asked my mom if she could help him get the last lug nut off his tire so he could change his flat … So my mother introduces herself and he said ” hello my name is Ted ” and then smiled then looked at me reached over and shook my hand and asked my name and I think I got the bad vibe as well because I said nothing to him … My mom said something about his smile really made her uncomfortable and then she noticed that he was missing the passenger seat in his beetle.

So she rolls the window back up and said she would call a tow truck to come to help him at the next city. Then speeds away while looking in her rearview mirror she sees him taking off the sling and getting back in the beetle and took off very fast in the opposite direction.

So that’s the night at 6 years old I shook the hand of Ted Bundy.” zanloveless
