WWII Veteran Receives 1000 Greeting Cards From Around The World On His 104th Birthday

A person is already lucky when he reaches the age of 70, but there’s so much wonder and celebration for those who reach 100 years old.

Meet Orland

Orland Philipps is a World War II veteran who just turned 104 years old last February 5, 2023.

His Journey

He served in the Second World War as a machinist for the army, and although he never saw much combat, he worked in intense conditions and was assigned to different islands in the Pacific, including New Guinea.

His Daughters’ Project

When his 104th birthday was approaching, his four daughters posted on Facebook to spread the good news and asked people from all over the world to send him birthday cards.

A Tradition

Orland’s daughters said that they’ve done the same thing a few years back and people sent tons of birthday cards coming from different locations. Orland said, “I don’t know what to think about all that many cards. I have been working on reading them. I read every one of them.”

What He Does

For him to be able to read all of the cards, Orland’s family made a system where he reads a stack of cards per day and takes a moment to appreciate who gave the card and where it came from.

An Opportunity

Orland’s family said that this project is special because this gives some people the chance to get to thank a veteran from the 1940s.

Sweet Messages

Orland even received some adorable handwritten cards from second graders who wanted to wish him good health on his birthday.

His Plans

Now Orland is planning to spend the rest of his days sending out thank-you cards to everyone who gave him birthday cards.
