Sometimes, we forget that animals feel emotions too, and they are capable of loving as well.

A farm in the South Central Pennsylvania region called “Here With Us Sanctuary” was established by Amanda in 2018. They now have around 200 animals, with over 100 birds.

Shrimp the Rooster was rescued along with another rooster. Both of them were abandoned by their previous owners, and now they have a nice place to live in.

He Stays Indoors

Shrimp is very docile so he’s always getting bullied and beaten up by the other roosters outside so the owner of the sanctuary brought him in and had him stay inside the house.

Basil The Hen

Shrimp eventually met a Cornish Cross chicken named Basil who was part of a larger rescue of the sanctuary back in 2021.

Her Condition

Basil lost her right leg due to an infection, as sadly, Cornish Cross chickens grow big and heavy so quickly so it’s typical for them to get leg issues and heart attacks even after rescue.

Love At First Sight

Shrimp fell in love with Basil. He would go through the baby gate and into Basil every morning and do little dances for her and go around the wheelchair to try to impress her.

He would also let her eat her food first during snacks and would pick up fallen pieces of food for her. Sometimes, he even just stares at Basil while she’s eating.

They’re Fond Of Each Other

People at the sanctuary saw that Basil is also fond of Shrimp as she’s known for driving other chickens off, but not Shrimp. Amanda said, “She can’t be with other hens, he can’t be with other roosters,” so it’s a wonder how they get along so well.
