3 Steps To Quickly Remove The Husk And Silk From Corn On The Cob

Summertime is here folks, and that means a few things. It means hot, humid days by the pool, and hopefully a day or two at the beach. It means sweating while I run errands in my old, trusty car that I refuse to replace, even though the air conditioning died years ago and I have to hope that I don’t get stuck in traffic. Summer means lazy evenings on the porch with a glass of sangria, counting the lighting bugs in the woods and the field. Finally, summer means barbecues with good friends and good food.

I have to admit that while I love to participate in a picnic, barbecue, or other summertime get-togethers, I rarely participate in the food preparation. Most of my friends know by now that it’s for the best, as we all learned that one time I tried to cook hamburgers which ended up looking like charred hockey pucks. So, I’m usually responsible for bringing chips and dip.

Corn on the cob is a popular summer food, but shucking the corn and removing all of the silk can be a huge pain. But, it turns out that there is a much easier and faster way to do it, which means more time with friends and family.

Here’s a quick rundown on a super-easy technique for shucking those stubborn ears of corn and easily removing all of the silk. It’s the steam from the microwave that really does the trick.

  1. Starting from the stalk end, slice off the tip 1 inch above the last row of kernels.
  2. Place on a plate, and microwave for 2 to 4 minutes.
  3. Grab the corn by the uncut end, and shake while squeezing at the same time. The corn will slide out husk-and-silk free!
