A new dog is easily one of the most exciting things that can happen to a family, especially if there is already a dog in residence.
I recently added a new dog to my ‘pack.’ It’s been a roller-coaster of emotions and excitement. One moment, everyone is resting quietly and getting along perfectly and the next, there’s a hurricane of dogs running circles around me and each other, and I’m struggling to maintain order in the chaos. Bringing a new doggy family member is not to be taken lightly. It will affect every single member of the household, humans and animals included. The decision to get a new pet should be in the best interests of everyone involved.
My new dog came from Florida, evicted from a shelter and moved north to make room for dogs affected by the hurricanes. He’s been in multiple shelters over a few months, and it’s been unsettling for him, so he’s struggling to feel safe. We’re all doing our best to help him get there.
Whether your new family member is a rescue or a purebred dog from a breeder, they are sure to add another layer of joy to the home. Those first introductions to their new space and family members are very important and will set the tone for the days, weeks, months, and years to come.
Rhett Barkley, an adorable Goldendoodle is about to get an adorable birthday surprise—a new puppy! When he sees his new doggy sibling, he doesn’t quite know what to think. But, it’s hard to resist that cute, fluffy face. Everybody is a little uncertain, but these two friendly dogs don’t take much time to warm up to one another. It isn’t long before they’re romping and playing in the yard like they’ve known each other forever.
