16 Things You Never Knew About ‘Matilda’

20 years go in 1996, one of the most beloved movie releases was a children’s fantasy comedy called Matilda.

It was based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl and it told the epic tale of an intelligent and sweet little girl named Matilda. Matilda lived a very difficult life until she gained telekinetic powers and used them to teach her cruel parents and school principal a lesson—it was the type of shenanigans that every kid has dreamed of. It was good ol’ fashioned over-the-top family fun. Who didn’t love the cake eating scene?

20 years later and the film is just as great as ever. Whether you have children now or not, it’s worth watching again. But regardless of how many times you’ve watched it, there are probably a lot of really cool and interesting facts that you had no idea about. So let’s have a look, shall we?

1. Matilda’s parents were played by Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman. But did you know that the two are actually married in real life?

Whether they’re being mean or kind, these two just look so right together!

2. Pam Ferris took on the role of the mean and nasty Agatha Trunchbull. To ensure that the children remained genuinely scared of her while filming, she kept the bad attitude even while the cameras were off!

3. Pam was also the same actress who played the mean Auntie Marge in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Need someone to be cruel to kids? Pam’s to go-to lady! Sheesh… actually, Pam is a British actress with a very impressive and diverse resume, with roles in theatre, television, and film.
