Sounds like he didn't have much of a choice, and UK pet laws are different than US.
I took out all of my coworkers as well as 6-8 really important people (tough positions that are hard to fill, and can't be done by anyone without qualifications) from the client when I did security...all because I was told that if I didn't come in, I would be removed from the schedule. I had a 24-36hr bug, was throwing up, fever, whole 9. Everyone else was out for 2-3 days.
I got soooooo much overtime filling those shifts once I was better, and was never questioned again on the rare chance I called out
That's a lot of words for "I'm a shitehead boss who doesn't pay what you're worth and less if you're a woman or minority"...
Still tryin to figure out how the store/assistant managers at a grocery I once worked at got to where they were...store manager only left his office to stock bananas, and the assistant store Mgr on the 'fresh' (fruits, Veg, deli, etc) somehow got put in charge of things he didn't know how to use himself - I had to teach him how to use a deli slicer when we needed help due to a rush one night!
