Amen! My husband was in Operation Desert Freedom. I've met quite a few of the men he served with. They're some of the best men I've ever had the privilege of knowing.
Thank you! I was thinking the same thing while reading this. OP has nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. He didn't do anything wrong.
My BIL does more of the caregiving for my twin nieces than my sister does. He always has, ever since the girls were born (13 years). Both sister and BIL have full time jobs, but BIL will stay home with the girls when they're not feeling well. I think it's wonderful that he does that. I think OP's family is being the jerk.
