Soccer is a nickname, not an official title. It comes from overprivilged rich English public ( and that means private to Americans) schoolboys in the 1800s who made up stupid names for things. They called Rugby Football "rugger" and Association Football "soccer", and Americans with their inate love for stupid names and the English aristocracy, keep calling it that long after anyone else.
