You are using your experience to judge a totally different situation. I’m truly sorry that no one has ever celebrated you, but the OP has lived another experience. It is unacceptable for his inlaws to make plans without checking with him, as well as his wife for accepting without checking. Most jobs only give so much time off yearly.
Read it again. OP stated she wasn’t upset about the food choice. She is upset that her mom told her child to keep a secret from her, multiple times.
Many states are “right to work” states and you can be fired at will. Dad went outside of his job description and cost the house a good bit of money.
