Due to her unusual condition, this woman experienced an incredible pregnancy that exceeded medical expectations.
Meet Kelsey
Kelsey Hatcher was 17 years old when she learned that she has a condition called uterine didelphys or double uterus, which is a rarity, affecting only 0.3% of people with uteruses.
Mom Of Five
She has had three single pregnancies with her other children, now aged 7, 4, and 23 months, and now she’s just given birth to her twin girls, Rebel and Roxi.
Unique Pregnancy
Kelsey conceived her twins in separate uteruses. Dr. Patel, one of her OB-GYNs, explained, “Most likely what happened is that she ovulated separately and had one egg come down each fallopian tube, meaning coming down on each side of the uterus, and then sperm traveled up on each separate uterus and fertilization occurred separately.”
Days Of Labor
In December, Kelsey had a labor that lasted an amazing twenty hours spread over two days. And then, Roxi was born through normal delivery at 7:45 p.m. on December 19.
Rebel Followed
10 hours later, Rebel was born via cesarean section on December 20 at 6:10 a.m., and both girls were born healthy, with Roxi weighing in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and Rebel at 7 pounds, 3.5 ounces.
Grand Entrance
The twins were originally scheduled to be born on December 25, Christmas Day, a day as unique as their birth story. But after an induction, they made their grand entrance a little earlier.
Unique Labor
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) team’s meticulous preparation and coordination culminated in the delivery. Each side of Kelsey’s body experienced a contraction differently, making her labor as unique as her pregnancy itself. She said, “As my contractions began, they were not consistently together but were within a few seconds of each other. I felt each side contracting in different areas as well.”
New Addition
With Roxi and Rebel joining them, the Hatcher family has grown to seven members as they welcome 2024.
